The Pandemic continues …

In common with other countries in sub-Saharan Africa, Malawi has shown much lower numbers of coronavirus cases than in Europe. Many factors contribute to this: tests are less available (only a total of 54,000 have been carried out thus far) and there is underreporting of the cause of deaths in village communities who have limited access to hospital, let alone intensive care. Absence of the high numbers with which we are becoming all too familiar here should not blind us to the real difficulties faced by Malawi in this pandemic. This a society when many were already struggling with the basic minimum needs of food and health care.

Oncology Clinic

Dr Nyasosela saw 50 patients on 2 October 2020. Ten of them were referred to the Cancer Centre, Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe. Ndi Moyo contributes 7,000 Kwacha for transport money and the patient has to fund the rest.

This is a vital clinic. It means that those cancer patients who are amenable to active treatment are assessed on-site then sent to Lilongwe for their treatment, usually either surgical or more complex chemotherapy.

It can mean survival for quite some time if not a cure. There are only 2 oncologists in the whole country so to have a way of getting our patients seen and treated is invaluable.

The garden and prayer house, designed for those of all faiths, provide oases of calm and opportunity for reflection when facing the difficult issues of life-limiting disease and bereavement.

It has been noted in the UK how much gardens can contribute to mental well-being in the midst of a pandemic and this is equally true for our Ndi Moyo patients who have also to battle a terminal diagnosis.
